Introducing
What is a Medical Weight Loss Programme?
A clinically supervised consultation with an Advanced Nurse Practitioner (ANP) for adults with a BMI over 30 who are seeking professional weight management support.
The assessment evaluates suitability for injectable weight loss medications, including Mounjaro (tirzepatide) and Wegovy (semaglutide), and provides personalised guidance, monitoring, and follow-up to achieve safe and effective results.
Frequently asked questions
What is your medical weight loss and management service?
A clinician-led programme combining medical assessment, lifestyle support, and - when appropriate - prescription weight-loss medication. We follow NICE guidance for who should be offered pharmacological support and how progress and safety should be monitored.
What does “NICE-aligned” mean?
NICE (National Institute for Health and Care Excellence) sets evidence-based standards used widely in UK clinical practice. We use this framework for eligibility, safe prescribing, follow-up, and stopping rules (for example, stopping a medication if it isn’t working sufficiently for you).
Who can be considered for medication such as Wegovy® or Mounjaro® underNICE-style criteria?
In general, medication may be considered for adults who have:
• BMI ≥30 kg/m²,
or
• BMI ≥27 kg/m² with
weight-related health conditions (for example: hypertension, dyslipidaemia,
obstructive sleep apnoea, prediabetes/type 2 diabetes, NAFLD, osteoarthritis),
and have already tried structured lifestyle changes without achieving sufficient progress.
Your clinician will confirm eligibility during your consultation.
Who cannot have Wegovy® or Mounjaro® through your service?
Medication may be
unsuitable or not prescribed if you are:
• Pregnant, trying to conceive, or breastfeeding
• Under 18 years
• Experiencing an active eating disorder or where an eating disorder is suspected
• Unable to commit to the required medical follow-up and monitoring
• With certain relevant medical histories where GLP‑1/GIP medicines may be inappropriate (this
is assessed individually)
We’ll go through your medical history, current
medicines, and safety screening before any prescribing decision.
Do you prescribe Wegovy® and Mounjaro®? What’s the difference? A: Whereclinically appropriate, we may prescribe:
• Wegovy® (semaglutide) — a GLP‑1 receptor agonist for weight management
• Mounjaro® (tirzepatide) — a dual GIP/GLP‑1 agonist, also used in metabolic/weight management pathways
Both reduce appetite and help improve eating control for many people, but suitability, side effects, and outcomes
vary.
Is medication a “quick fix”?
No. NICE frameworks position medication as an adjunct to lifestyle change—not a replacement.
Long-term success depends on nutrition, activity, sleep, stress, and behaviour change, plus a realistic maintenance plan.
What happens at the first appointment?
A clinician will complete:
• Medical and weight history (including previous attempts)
• Current medications and allergy check
• Screening for contraindications and red flags
• Baseline measurements (as appropriate)
• Discussion of
your goals and expectations
• A clear explanation of benefits, risks, side effects, and follow-up schedule
What side effects should I know about?
The most common side effects are gastrointestinal, particularly during dose increases:
• Nausea, reflux/heartburn, constipation, diarrhoea, bloating We provide a structured dose-escalation plan and practical strategies to reduce side effects. Rare but serious risks are discussed in your consent process.
How do you monitor safety?
Monitoring typically includes check-ins during dose escalation and then regular reviews to assess: Tolerability and side effects Weight change and waist/measurements where used Eating patterns and wellbeing Whether the medication is meeting agreed goals and remains appropriate You’ll also be advised what symptoms require urgent medical review.
What are the “stopping rules” (NICE-style)?
NICE guidance for weight-loss medicines commonly includes stopping if you donot achieve adequate weight loss after a defined trial periodat an effective dose, or if side effects outweigh benefits. Your clinician will explain the specific review point used in your plan.
How quickly will I lose weight?
It varies. Some people see early appetite change within weeks, but sustainable weight loss is usually gradual over months. We focus on safe, realistic targets and long-term maintenance.
Can I stop once I reach my goal weight?
Possibly, but many people need an ongoing maintenance strategy. Stopping medication can lead to increased appetite and weight regain in some individuals, so we plan maintenance early (nutrition, activity, relapse prevention, and follow-up).
Do I need to be seen in person?
Prescribing and monitoring should meet safe medical standards. Depending on your situation and local regulations, some appointments may be in person and some may be remote—your clinician will confirm what’s appropriate. If you tell me your preferred eligibility wording (e.g. strict BMI thresholds only, or BMI + comorbidity examples) and whether you want to mention blood tests or ECG as part of screening, I’ll tailor this to your exact clinic pathway and keep it tight for your website.
"I was nervous about starting medicated weight loss, but choosing Llyn-Ox was one of the best decisions I made. Seeing a qualified prescriber face-to-face gave me confidence from the start, and the monthly appointments have kept me motivated and accountable.
The ongoing support has been professional, personalised and completely non-judgemental. I've learnt so much about healthy habits and nutrition, and knowing Julie is always there to answer questions has made the whole journey feel safe, supported and sustainable.
I wouldn't hesitate to recommend Llyn-Ox to anyone considering medicated weight loss."
