What is a Medical Hair Restoration?

PRP Hair Restoration is a medical treatment that uses your body’s own healing growth factors to stimulate natural hair growth. A small sample of your blood is drawn and processed to concentrate the platelet-rich plasma, which is then carefully injected into the scalp to support healthier, thicker-looking hair.

This treatment helps strengthen existing hair follicles, improve hair density, and slow shedding. It is ideal for men and women experiencing early thinning or mild to moderate hair loss. Results develop gradually over several months, with a series of treatments recommended for optimal improvement.

Frequently asked questions

What is PRP hair restoration?

PRP (Platelet-Rich Plasma)hair restoration is a treatment that uses a concentrated portion of your own blood (rich in platelets and growth factors) to support the scalp environment and encourage healthier-looking, stronger hair growth. It is commonly used for thinning hair and early hair loss.

How does PRP work?

A small blood sample is taken and processed to isolate platelet-rich plasma. This PRP is then applied and/or introduced into the scalp to support tissue repair and follicle function. Results vary between individuals and depend on the underlying cause of hair loss.

Who is PRP suitable for?

PRP may be suitable if you
are experiencing:

•    Early-stage hair thinning
•    Androgenetic
(pattern) hair loss (men or women)
•    Post-stress or post-illness shedding (after medical evaluation)
•    General reduction in hair density

A consultation is essential to assess whether PRP is appropriate and to discuss other causes of hair loss
(e.g. thyroid issues, iron deficiency, medication effects, autoimmune
conditions).

Who is not suitable for PRP?

PRP may not be suitable if
you have:

•    A current scalp infection or active inflammatory scalp condition
•    Certain blood disorders or bleeding disorders
•    Current anticoagulant therapy (depends on indication and medical advice)
•    Severe anaemia
•    Pregnancy or breastfeeding
•    A history of fainting with needles/blood tests (we can discuss ways to support you)

We will go through a full medical history and advise appropriately.

What happens during a PRP hair restoration appointment?

Your appointment typically includes:

•    Scalp assessment and photos (where used for tracking progress)
•    A small blood draw
•    Preparation of your PRP
•    Numbing of the scalp where required
•    A combined approach of scalp stimulation and PRP delivery

Exact technique and suitability are discussed during your consultation.

Do you use numbing cream?

Yes — we typically use a topical local anaesthetic cream (such as EMLA) to help improve comfort. You may still feel pressure, vibration, or brief sharp sensations in some areas.

Do you also use microneedling and a hair growth serum?

In our clinic, PRP is commonly combined with scalp microneedling and a hair growth serum. Microneedling can help stimulate the scalp and may support absorption of topical products. Your treatment plan will be tailored to your scalp condition and goals.

Is PRP injected into the scalp?

PRP can be delivered into the scalp via small injections. This is a common part of PRP hair restoration.

We’ll explain what to expect, including comfort measures and aftercare.

How many sessions will I need?

Many clients require a course of treatments. A common approach is:

•    3-6 sessions spaced around 4 weeks apart, then
•    Maintenance sessions every 3–6 months depending on response and hair goals

Your plan may vary.

When will I see results?

PRP is gradual. Many people notice changes such as reduced shedding or improved hair quality first, with density changes taking longer. Typical timeframes discussed in clinic are:

•    Early changes: 6–12 weeks
•    More visible improvements: 3–6 months
Results vary and cannot be guaranteed.

Is there any downtime?

Downtime is usually minimal. You may experience:

•    Temporary redness or sensitivity of the scalp
•    Mild swelling or tenderness
•    Pinpoint bleeding (immediately after)
•    Mild headache or tightness
These usually settle within 24–48 hours.

What should I avoid after PRP hair restoration?

Aftercare may include:

•    Avoid washing hair for 24 hours (or as advised)
•    Avoid heavy exercise, saunas/steam rooms, and swimming for 24–48 hours
•    Avoid hair dye/chemical treatments for around 1 week (clinic-dependent)
•    Avoid scratching or picking the scalp
•    Avoid alcohol for 24 hours if possible

We will provide tailored aftercare guidance at your appointment.

What are the risks and side effects?

PRP is generally well tolerated because it uses your own blood, but risks can include:

•    Bruising or swelling
•    Tenderness and temporary discomfort
•    Headache
•    Infection (rare, but possible with any skin procedure)
•    Temporary shedding (“shedding phase”) in some individuals
•    Dizziness/fainting related to needles or blood draw

You will have the opportunity to discuss risks and ask questions before consenting.

Can PRP cause infection?

Infection is uncommon but possible. We use aseptic technique and aftercare guidance to reduce risk. If you develop worsening pain, increasing redness/heat, pus, fever, or feel significantly unwell after treatment, seek urgent medical advice and contact the clinic.

Can I have PRP if I’m on minoxidil or other hair treatments?

Often yes, but it depends on your overall plan and scalp tolerance.

We’ll advise how to sequence treatments safely and what to pause before/after your session.

Is PRP suitable for all hair types and genders?

PRP can be used for different hair types and for men and women. Suitability depends more on the cause and stage of hair loss than hair type alone.

"After years of thinning at the crown I honestly didn’t expect much, but after two PRP sessions I can already see a difference. The shedding has settled and I’m getting loads of little ‘baby hairs’ coming through around the crown — even my barber commented.
It feels like my hair is finally starting to fill in again."
